Pregnancy comes with many questions and concerns, and in a rural community, finding resources close to home can be a challenge. For expectant moms in Jefferson County, help may be closer than they think.
The Jefferson Pregnancy Center is one place women can turn to for help, offering free pregnancy tests along with baby diapers and clothing.
Zoe Lemon, a volunteer with the Jefferson Pregnancy Center, says the center works to connect mothers with the support they need.
“They’re worried about how they’re going to provide for the baby, and, again, we give them support from the health department. Healthy Start is a wonderful, wonderful program. They even supply doulas which is a partner to partner with them through the pregnancy and through the birth.” Lemon said.
Through Healthy Start, expectant moms can attend free prenatal groups at the Jefferson County Health Department covering everything from how a baby develops to labor, delivery, breastfeeding and nutrition.
Lemon said donations help the center serve more families in need.
“We get tons of donations of diapers of course we always need more and wipes because we give the diapers and wipes. We gave a whole case of diapers recently to a couple of moms that live together and their little kids live tighter, and that was a wonderful thing for them,” Lemon said.
Healthy Start’s next free prenatal group is Aug. 31 at the Jefferson County Health Department.
