Florida A&M University swept Alcorn State 3-0 at home during homecoming weekend on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The Lady Rattlers maintained control throughout the match, winning the three sets 25-10, 25-14 and 25-17.

Despite Alcorn State’s effort to close the scoring gap, Florida A&M continued to execute offensively and defensively to secure the victory.

Following the dominant homecoming sweep, Head Coach Gokhan Yilmaz emphasized process over perfection.

“It’s not how many in a row you win, but how much you improve,” Yilmaz said.

Yilmaz explained that he believes progress matters more than the number of consecutive wins.

His focus on improvement reflects on the team’s preparation for the remainder of the season and the upcoming conference tournament.

Outside hitter LaDonna Trantham also emphasized the importance of preparation and focus, saying “Directing our attention to our next move instead of just worrying about the next play.”

Alcorn State used their 1-minute and 15-second time outs, but Florida A&M remained focused. Ultimately, it is this exact focus and preparation mindset that has kept the Lady Rattlers on their current winning streak.

Trantham contributed 12 kills during the match, demonstrating her offensive impact. As an outside hitter, she contributes both offensively and defensively, making consistency in serving, passing and hitting essential to her position.

Middle blocker Farah Farooq also contributed to the team’s dominant performance, recording two blocks, four kills and a staggering .800 hitting percentage.

Noting that the team “did really well,” Farooq helped secure Florida A&M’s seventh straight win, a match where they produced more than double the total kills of Alcorn State.

The team’s continued emphasis on improvement, communication and preparation will be important as it works toward postseason competition. After hosting Southern earlier on Monday, Oct. 26 Florida A&M will travel to play Alabama State on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
