It has come to the point I feel this is necessary, though my husband says it’s not the route he’s personally take. My husband was a line cook at Red Elephant here in town. Over the course of the past couple of weeks we’ve had several complications. First, my husband was sick, actively vomiting in the restaurants restroom and barely able to stand for more than 10 minutes at a time. How dare he not stay and cook your food, though? How dare the man that is throwing up and crapping every 10 minutes didn’t stay and cook your food? Yeah, they were upset about that. Next, we had a pet loss, a cat that has been in his life for 4 years, passed due to heart failure. I found the cat and had to call my husband at work at his other job (one he had to acquire after he’s been promised 35 hours repeatedly, only to be scheduled sub 30 everytime). He came home and took care of the cat and still went to work at Red Elephant, but (screams the General Manager) he was an hour late! He still came in after finding his cat dead, but he was late, so oh no! Next, I had a mental health crisis, one that ended horribly with an involuntary baker-act. My husband was busy taking me to the hospital where I received medical care for a [redacted] attempt before being transported directly to a mental health facility. He then spent the next 72 hours caring for our children by himself as we have no one else to watch them. When my husband called to inform them, he was NOT told he was fired. He was instead told to take a week and then give the general manager a call- a one week suspension is common practice in this restaurant and he has seen every single person get one before being fired save for the blatantly disrespectful ones. He calls today, to be told that they already hired someone else and that they are not sure what hours they’d have for him. Still, not outright telling him he was fired. Later, he messages to ask outright, to be told “we needed to fill the position.” I understand that, but he was never informed he was fired. This is not a good look for any employer and extremely unprofessional. This is extremely unprofessional for the individual as well, and is not the type of general manager I’d want for my restaurant, but maybe I possess a bit more empathy.
