Neighbors ask for delay on Welaunee Arch land use change as 1,227-acre development plan comes to light
Resident Lynne Takacs is leading the push to postpone the process, arguing that most neighbors are unaware of what is being proposed.
“This is not about pro-development or anti-development. This is about the public getting the opportunity to know what’s happening before big decisions are made,” Takacs said.
Takacs has been following the development since attending the developer’s first public meeting in June but said she was blindsided to see it already moving toward rezoning.
“They told us that there was no buyer lined up, and there was really no plan in place yet,” Takacs said.
She has since created a webpage and requested city documents that outline a 1,227-acre development, including housing, commercial spaces and open spaces.
The law firm representing the owners, Powerhouse Inc., says they have no immediate plans to build themselves and that the plan is a “unified” vision without risking uncoordinated developments later on.
A representative for Grow Tallahassee points out that development in the area has been discussed for over 20 years, with the Welaunee Arch Master Plan adopted in 2020. But Takacs argues this plan is different.
“To me, I think since it’s changed, the public should have a right to come and view it, ask questions, and make comments,” Takacs said.
The Development Review Committee will review the project Monday at 9 a.m. At that meeting, neighbors can make public comment.
