One thing the Tallahassee reddit community regularly references for those visiting/considering Tallahassee for relocation is the quality of natural diversity in the area. That shared, I haven’t seen many actual posts showing it. I’m going to give a shot at making a few shares in the coming weeks that do so. Starting with a video that highlights melanistic/black coyotes in our area. Worth noting, the gene for black coloration wasn’t found in the coyote population further west that over time expanded into our area. DNA studies have shown the genetic introduction actually was introduced when coyotes expanding eastward mated with red wolves that did have melanistic genes. The state of Florida has one of the highest percentages of melanistic coyotes at 8%, compared to the Carolinas at 5%, Georgia at 3%, and Alabama at 2%. Studies also show that in deep canopy forests and swampy lowland settings, the black coloration helps coyotes hide in shadows better than tan coloration with increased survivability and lifespans. ALL footage in the video was captured via camera less than 15 miles from the steps of the state capital building!👍 submitted by /u/According_Weekend_51 |
