This happened a few days ago, but details are sparse. Per the article, FHP was looking for a man for unspecified reasons. They began pursuing him, and he crashed into 2 vehicles and put 3 innocent people in the hospital. The FHP spokesperson did not disclose why they were looking for the suspect or why they decided to chase him. It’s also noteworthy that FHP relaxed it’s chase policy in 2024 to allow higher-risk behavior from troopers, including tactics deemed unsafe by other states. Since then, yearly deaths from FHP chases are up 2-3 times what they were prior to the change, and FHP PITs more than twice as many drivers per year. (Source) We don’t know why FHP was chasing him. The reason may have been totally legitimate. Some people do present a legitimate threat to the public that justifies chasing them, and sometimes troopers are putting themselves at risk to do so. Still, as they have been causing more questionable chase-related crashes killing innocent people or causing them permanent injury, we should be asking why they decided the risk to innocent people in our city was worth chasing him. submitted by /u/Excellent_Condition |
