Florida A&M University Homecoming is more than just an event; it’s a moment that lives in the hearts of students, alumni and families alike. This year’s theme, “Remember the Times,” resonated deeply with Rattlers, as it encouraged everyone to reflect on the memories and moments that define their college experience. For many, homecoming serves as a reminder of the legacy, pride and sense of community that FAMU fosters.

Aviah Djuliette Oliver, a second-year biology pre-med scholar from Orlando, Florida, shared how this year’s theme brought back fond memories of her freshman homecoming. “That homecoming was a family affair, with my entire family traveling up to celebrate with me,” Oliver said.

Her father, a FAMU alumnus, played a significant role in making that experience special. “Together, we bonded over the school spirit, traditions and sense of pride that FAMU holds,” she said. The experience was a rite of passage for Oliver, creating memories she will carry for a lifetime.

Family and tradition are cornerstones of the FAMU experience. Oliver described how showing her family around campus, especially her brothers and mother, was a highlight. “Seeing the excitement and curiosity in their eyes made me feel proud and grateful to be part of this legacy,” she said.

Homecoming, for her, solidified her connection to the university, reminding her of why she chose FAMU in the first place. This year’s theme, “Remember the Time,” brought those memories to the forefront, giving her a chance to relive the excitement of her freshman year.

For second-year criminal justice scholar Alayah Wilder from Honolulu, Hawaii, homecoming and the “Remember the Times” theme also evoked strong nostalgia. Reflecting on her first days at FAMU, Wilder shared, “One of my favorite memories is when I first arrived at FAMU and learned how to play spades.”

As someone who came from a distant place, the simple act of learning a beloved game like spades carried significant meaning. “It perfectly illustrated what it means to attend an HBCU,” Wilder said. Bonding over ‘90s throwback music and a card game was a quintessential FAMU experience that solidified her sense of community and belonging.

“The theme was a powerful reminder to cherish these moments,” Wilder continued. “Life, especially college life, moves so fast and doesn’t wait for anyone.” The Homecoming theme encouraged students to take a step back, reflect on their time and appreciate the memories they’ve made. Whether it’s reaching out to someone new or savoring the joy of the present, Wilder emphasized how these moments will shape the future.

Homecoming at FAMU is a celebration of community, culture and legacy. It’s a time for Rattlers past and present to reconnect, remember, and reflect. As alumna Caitlyn K. Davis put it, “Remember the time you didn’t let past choices hold you back. Remember the time you took a moment to simply enjoy yourself and live fully in the now.”

For students like Oliver and Wilder, this year’s Homecoming theme served as a beautiful reminder of how the moments made at FAMU continue to influence and inspire them. As the echoes of “Remember the Time” fade, the memories created will undoubtedly last a lifetime, reminding each Rattler of the unique journey they’ve embarked on and the legacy they’re continuing to build.
